LinkedIn has been evolving rapidly. Here is a look at what’s new on the platform, what’s right and what’s not.
LinkedIn is more of a journey, than a networking site. It starts with creating a profile, sending invites and the elation on touching the first 50 or 100. Oh, the Age of Innocence! Then, you track profiles and movements across the industry, explore different features, start expressing views and meet like minded people across the world. The ride is almost effortless after that, till there are changes in some features, and adversely affected dissenting groups are created. LinkedIn is running a business, not a social service organization, hence, changes to resolve their administrative and commercial issues are only to be expected. Except for manipulating organic circulation, to reduce traffic or sell paid services.
Here is how I see LinkedIn evolving, what seems to be going right and where the platform can do better to help its users.
What are the things going for LinkedIn in 2016 –
- Slideshare and Groups continue to be engrossing, and have a lot more material, than one has time to scan or read.
- A blatant sales pitch on LinkedIn is still scoffed at. Fortunately, it remains essentially a networking platform. It is your business to see, how you use it for your business.
- An interesting fact is the engagement and frank expression of views shown by members from the Western countries. Indians, in my opinion still tend to be conservative, and prefer private messaging rather than Liking or Commenting on the post.
What can be made better on the Platform –
1. The notifications for Pulse posts are not being sent to the entire network by LinkedIn. This has led to a drastic reduction in the number of views.
2. There is an increase in ‘girlie pics’ and other posts inappropriate to LinkedIn being circulated. So many others are just mindless imports from WhatsApp or FaceBook, but the inappropriateness becomes glaring on this platform. The decorum of a professional network needs to be maintained.
3. The LinkedIn app is good overall, other than a few glitches
a. The response on posts should land on the post itself, not in the inbox. Maybe, it was done to limit the additional circulation that viewer engagement creates.
b. The Pulse app does not work smoothly, and repeatedly flashes a message “ Unfortunately, Pulse has stopped working”.
c. Changing the notification settings does not help. I still do not receive notifications about all posts from my network.
These are some of the things I observed and I am sure you have observed some more too. Do share some of those that come to your mind.
